How to address Key Selection Criteria (KSC)

Many organisations use key selection criteria (KSC) or just selection criteria as the foundation and framework of their recruitment and selection process.

Organisations identify key elements of what skills or abilities are required for someone to competently perform in this role.

Previous experience is not necessarily a prerequisite but it is important for you to clearly and concisely communicate how you believe your knowledge, skills and experience meet the requirements of the key selection criteria listed.

How you address the KSC will influence whether your application is considered suitable for progression within the recruitment process.

Here are some tips and hints for addressing the key selection criteria:

  • Before commencing your application carefully read the KSC.
  • If you are asked to demonstrate your experience, skills and abilities it may help if you use the claim – evidence – benefit rule. This means make your claim, back it up with evidence and then state the benefit to the organisation.
  • The following are words often used in selection criteria and some responses that could be used to help address these:
    • demonstrate: details of previous experience and examples or successes achieved in previous roles, duties or similar experiences
    • ability: details of previous responsibilities and how well you performed
    • proven experience / track record:  achievements or improvements you implemented, positive feedback received, roles or duties and successes
    • proven knowledge: how was this attained, how is the knowledge implemented, what benefits were achieved
    • an understanding of:  outline key elements of your understanding, cite best practice if you know it and indicate the level or extent of you knowledge and how you implement it
    • qualifications: provide copies of documents only, indicate how your learning helps in the workplace
  •  Don’t be reluctant to detail your past achievements and successes in the key areas
  •  Aplications should usually contain an up-to-date Resume or CV together with copies of relevant qualifications.
  •  Make sure that referees are aware that they may be contacted to provide feedback on your past work related experience.
